Gopalkala is a Janmashtami special recipe. Gopalkala Recipe is a popular offering to Lord Krishna on Janmashtami . This is very easy and quick recipe. This is healthy recipe as it contains lots of proteins and fibres too. You can make this for breakfast or evening snack too.

What is the meaning of Gopalkala

Krishnas Love for dairy products is known to everyone. Milk, Ghee, Butter, Curd, Makhan are among them. He use to graze cows with his friends Gwalas. During the lunch time he use to mix every bodies lunch with some curd and dish is served to all the gwalas.

That is the reason, gopalkala is made on the Janmashtami festival day, offered to Krishna idol as naivedya and then, distributed as Prasad to the devotees.

Ingredients:

Gopalkala is a savory dish made of beaten rice/ Poha, cucumbers, green chilies, Curd, coconut and the tempering is done using ghee. All it takes is 10 minutes and making your Janmashtami very special and delicious.

Optional ingredients for Gopalkala :

  • Popped millet (jowar lahiya) – ½ cup
  • Puffed rice ( murmura) -1/2 cup
  • Optional chopped mixed fruit – apple, Banana, guava – ½ cup
  • Soaked Chana dal / Bengal gram – 1 tbsp
  • Pomegranate seeds – 1 tbsp or more

Gopalkala Janmashtami Festival Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Poha/ Flatten Rice
  • 1/2 Cup Curd beaten
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 Cup Coconut grated
  • 1/2 Cup Cucumber chopped
  • 1 tsp Desi Ghee
  • 1/2 tsp Black mustard seeds
  • 1/4 tsp Asafoetida ( Hing )
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin Seeds
  • 1 tsp Ginger chopped
  • 1 tsp Green Chilli chopped

Instructions

  • Wash thick poha using water in a bowl. Remove all water. Keep aside for 5 minutes.
  • Add beaten curd to this and mix well.
  • Now add salt that you can adjust according to your taste.
  • Add grated Coconut and chopped Cucumber.
  • Heat ghee in a small pan. Add Mustard seeds, Asafoetida, cumin seeds. When they stop spluttering, add curry leaves. 
  • Now add chopped ginger , green chillies and Cashew nuts.
  • Take off the stove and let cool a little.
  • Add the cooled tempering. Mix well and gopalkala is ready to offer to Govinda – Krishna.

Notes

  • Gopalkala tends to thicken after sometime. In that case, you may need to add some milk at the time of serving.
