My Mother always prefers using grounded Channa dal in any preparation than ready made Besan (Gram flour) and we all love whatever she cooks! Here is my mothers’ special recipe of soft melt in mouth channa dal barfi .

Do not rush to the store; instead, follow this easy Chana dal burfi recipe. What is more, you can make the Chana Dal barfi in your kitchen with ingredients found at home and that too in a matter of minutes.

There are many different ways of making chana dal barfi . But this is very easy recipe in which we will fry the channa dal before grinding and the end result is awesome.

How to make Channa Dal Barfi :

  • Clean chana dal, soak in lukewarm water for 2 hours. Once soaked well, put dal in sieve, drain extra water.Keep the dal in sieve for 5 minutes. Spread dal over cloth and wipe it. 
  • Put ghee in a pan, let it melt. Put the dal in the ghee.Stir and roast the dal well until crispy. Keep the flame high. Once crispy,turn off flame. Take out the dal and let it cool. It took 12-15 minutes to roast the dal. Take out the leftover ghee in a separate bowl. Once cool Grind the Dal. 

  • Make the Sugar syrup with sugar and milk. Cook until sugar dissolves, add the grinded dal flour in milk.Keep flame medium. Stir and cook it,till it reaches the consistency of barfi. Mix well. Reduce flame. Once dense , add dry fruits and cardamom powder. Mix well. Grease plate with ghee. Pour the mixture and garnish it with dryfruits Keep to cool. Once set, mark into pieces.

  • 1 Cup Channa dal
  • 1 Cup Sugar
  • 2 Cups Milk
  • 1/2 Cup Desi Ghee
  • 1 tsp Green Cardamon Powder
  • few Cashew Nuts chopped
  • few Almonds chopped


  • Wash and clean 1 cup chana dal.
  • Soak in enough water for 3 to 4 hours.
  • Drain, wipe and let it air dry for 1/2 an hour.
  • Take 2 tbsp Desi Ghee in a pan and heat. Add the dal and fry on medium flame till its crispy and golden brown.
  • Take out in a bowl and let it cool for some time.
  • Grind into a fine powder.
  • Make sugar syrup with 1 cup sugar and 2 cups of water . When sugar melts add the grounded dal and cook on medium flame till it thickens and reaches the consistency of barfi.
  • Add chopped nuts and powdered green cardamom powder.
  • Add 2 tbsp Desi Ghee. If you want less ghee you can skip this.
  • Grease the tray or place a baking paper and pour the mixture to set.
  • Garnish it with dry fruits, Press slightly. Let it set completely.
  • Cut into desired shape and relish the Sumptuous Chana Dal Barfi.



  • Press or eat and check the dal if it is fried well or not. 
  • Dal will crackel if its crispy
  • If you wish to use less ghee then do not add leftover ghee at the end in the sugar syrup. 
  • Make sure you check the dal if it is crunchy. 
  • When you add powdered Dal to the sugar syrup make sure you stir it continuously.

Sumptuous Chana Dal Barfi is ready to be relished on any special or festive occassion. If kept in fridge it keeps good for 10 to 12 days.
