Dadpe Pohe: Maharashtra’s Simplest Breakfast with the Biggest Heart
Some dishes are created with elaborate techniques and expensive ingredients. Others become unforgettable because of their simplicity.
Dadpe Pohe belongs to the second kind.
Jump to RecipeThis traditional Maharashtrian dish is one of the most underrated breakfasts in Indian cuisine. There is no complicated cooking process, no heavy masalas, and no restaurant-style presentation. Yet, one bite of freshly made Dadpe Pohe carries the freshness, comfort, and warmth of a homemade meal that modern food often forgets.
Light, flavorful, and deeply rooted in Maharashtrian homes, Dadpe Pohe is proof that simple food can still feel extraordinary.
What Is Dadpe Pohe?
Unlike the popular cooked version of poha found across India, Dadpe Pohe is mostly a no-cook preparation.
The word “dadpe” comes from the Marathi technique of lightly pressing or steaming ingredients together so the flavors blend naturally. Thin poha is softened gently with fresh coconut, onions, green chilies, coriander, lemon juice, and a fragrant tempering.
The result is fresh, soft, slightly crunchy, mildly spicy, and incredibly refreshing.
It is the kind of breakfast that feels light on the stomach yet deeply satisfying.
A Dish Born from Simplicity
Dadpe Pohe reflects the spirit of old Maharashtrian kitchens — practical, seasonal, and waste-free.
Before packaged cereals and instant snacks became common, households relied on ingredients that were affordable, quick to prepare, and nourishing. Poha was one of them.
Without needing elaborate cooking, women in traditional homes could prepare Dadpe Pohe within minutes, especially during busy mornings or humid summers when lighter meals were preferred.
The beauty of the dish lies in balance:
- softness from poha,
- sweetness from coconut,
- sharpness from onions,
- heat from chilies,
- and freshness from lemon and coriander.
Every ingredient has a purpose, yet none overpower the other.

Traditional Dadpe Pohe Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 cups thin poha
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 green chilies, finely chopped
- ½ cup fresh grated coconut
- 2 tablespoons roasted peanuts
- Fresh coriander leaves
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- Salt to taste
- 1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
For Tempering
- 1 tablespoon oil
- ½ teaspoon mustard seeds
- Few curry leaves
- A pinch of hing (asafoetida)
Method
Place the thin poha in a wide bowl. Sprinkle a little water over it very gently to soften it slightly. Do not soak it completely.
Add onions, green chilies, coconut, peanuts, coriander, salt, sugar, and lemon juice.
Prepare the tempering by heating oil and adding mustard seeds, curry leaves, and hing. Pour this over the poha mixture.
Now comes the traditional “dadpe” step — cover the bowl and let it rest for 5–10 minutes so the flavors blend beautifully.
Serve fresh with chai or buttermilk.
